제1조(목적) 이 법은 재한외국인에 대한 처우 등에 관한 기본적인 사항을 정함으로써 재한외국인이 대한민국 사회에 적응하여 개인의 능력을 충분히 발휘할 수 있도록 하고, 대한민국 국민과 재한외국인이 서로를 이해하고 존중하는 사회 환경을 만들어 대한민국의 발전과 사회통합에 이바지함을 목적으로 한다.

① This Act aims to contribute to the development of the Republic of Korea and social integration by establishing fundamental matters concerning the treatment of foreigners residing in the Republic of Korea, enabling foreigners residing in the Republic of Korea to adapt to the society of the Republic of Korea and fully demonstrate their individual capabilities, and creating a social environment where the nationals of the Republic of Korea and foreigners residing in the Republic of Korea understand and respect each other.
