제40조에 따라 부여하는 외국인등록번호는 생년월일ㆍ성별ㆍ등록기관 등을 표시하는 13자리 숫자로 한다. <개정 2016.9.29>

외국인등록번호는 1인 1번호로 하며, 이미 부여한 번호를 다른 사람에게 부여해서는 아니 된다.

An alien registration number shall be one number per person, and a number already granted shall not be granted to another person.

체류지 관할 청장ㆍ사무소장 또는 출장소장은 법 제31조에 따라 등록을 한 외국인(이하 "등록외국인"이라 한다)이 법 제35조제1호에 따른 사항 중 성별 또는 생년월일 변경을 이유로 외국인등록사항의 변경신고를 하였을 때에는 외국인등록번호를 새로 부여해야 한다. <신설 2022.12.27>

When a head of a regional immigration office, director of an immigration office, or head of a branch office having jurisdiction over the place of sojourn reports a change in alien registration matters due to a change in sex or date of birth among the matters listed in Article 35 (1) of the Act, for an alien who has completed registration pursuant to Article 31 of the Act (hereinafter referred to as "registered alien"), a new alien registration number shall be granted. <Newly inserted by Act No. 15930, Dec. 27, 2022>

법 제31조에 따른 외국인등록을 하기 전에 「법인 아닌 사단ㆍ재단 및 외국인의 부동산등기용 등록번호 부여절차에 관한 규정」 제12조 단서에 따라 부동산등기용등록번호를 부여받은 사람이 외국인등록을 하는 경우에는 해당 부동산등기용등록번호를 외국인등록번호로 부여한다. 다만, 부동산등기용등록번호를 부여받은 이후 성별이나 생년월일이 변경된 경우에는 외국인등록번호를 새로 부여한다. <신설 2022.12.27>

In the case where a person who has been granted a registration number for real estate registration pursuant to the proviso to Article 12 of the "Regulations on the Procedure for Granting Registration Numbers for Real Estate Registration to Juridical Persons Not Constituting Juridical Persons, Foundations, and Aliens" registers as an alien before completing alien registration pursuant to Article 31 of the Act, the registration number for real estate registration shall be granted as the alien registration number.
